As someone who loves to read but sometimes struggles with reading print books due to a disability, audiobooks have been a game changer for me. I am so grateful for the availability of audiobooks through library services like Tipperary Library Service and online resources like Librivox. One of the things I appreciate about Tipperary Library Service is their commitment to providing disability services. Their website even has a section dedicated to resources for people with disabilities, including audiobooks. It's so nice to feel seen and catered to as a person with a disability. The audiobooks on Librivox are also a fantastic resource. They are all in the public domain, so they are free to access and download. The readers are volunteers, so the quality can be hit or miss, but I have found some truly wonderful audiobooks on the site. One of my favorite things about audiobooks is the way they allow me to multitask. I can "read" a book while cleaning the house, cooking dinner, or doing other tasks that require my hands but not my full attention. It's also nice to be able to set a sleep timer and fall asleep listening to a book. Now, let's dive into some of the audiobooks I've enjoyed recently from these two resources. First up, from Tipperary Library Service, I recently listened to "Educated" by Tara Westover. This memoir blew me away. Westover's story is one of growing up in a strict, abusive household in rural Idaho, and somehow managing to educate herself enough to earn a PhD from Cambridge University. The audiobook is read by Julia Whelan, who does an excellent job of bringing Westover's prose to life. This book is at times difficult to listen to, as it deals with themes of abuse and gaslighting, but it's ultimately a story of triumph and resilience. Another great audiobook from Tipperary Library Service is "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah. This historical fiction novel is set in France during WWII and follows two sisters as they navigate the realities of war. The audiobook is read by Polly Stone, who does an amazing job with the French dialogue and accents. The story is heart-wrenching and beautifully written, and the audiobook is a fantastic way to experience it. Moving on to Librivox, I recently listened to "North and South" by Elizabeth Gaskell. This novel is one of the earliest examples of social realism in British literature, and deals with themes of class, labor, and gender roles. The audiobook is read by Elizabeth Klett, who does an excellent job with the accents and dialects of the various characters. It was a bit challenging to keep track of all the different characters and their relationships to each other, but ultimately a very rewarding listen. Another great Librivox find for me was "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. This classic horror novel is told through a series of journal entries and letters, and the audiobook is performed by a full cast, which really brings the story to life. The sound effects and music also add to the eerie atmosphere of the story. I found myself really invested in the characters and their fates, despite having seen various adaptations of the story before. Overall, I am so grateful for the availability of audiobooks through resources like Tipperary Library Service and Librivox. They allow me to access books I might not otherwise be able to, and to experience them in a way that fits my lifestyle and my needs. If you haven't given audiobooks a chance yet, I highly recommend checking them out!
